73rd BS during the Aleutian Campaign
The men in the picture are, left to right, 1st LT Walter Wagner-squadron navigator, 2nd LT Leonard Moore-co pilot, Capt. Warren Beth-pilot & flight leader, 1st LT Bailey-bombardier, SSGT Leonard Hawk-gunner, SSGT Stewart-ground crew chief, TSGT Stephens-radio operator. Picture was taken after the flight returned to base. The crew of lead ship in a flight of six B26's that attacked the Hibiki class Japanese destroyers Oboro and Hatsuharu on October 16, 1942. One of the planes dropped out with engine trouble and one was shot down going in. The remaining four B26's made deck level bomb runs on the two ships with twenty 300 pound bombs with 4.5 second fuses. Direct hits were observed on both ships. The Oboro was sunk and the Hatsuharu was severely crippled.
